Every hitch component has its own rating. The weakest link limits the entire system. Here's how to match the right hitch to your trailer and understand when a weight-distributing system is required.
Receiver hitches are classified by their maximum trailer weight (GTW) and maximum tongue weight (TW). The class tells you the hitch's structural rating — but you must also verify that the receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, and coupler are all rated to match. Every component in the chain must be rated to the load.

Class III and IV hitches are rated higher when used with a weight-distributing (WD) system. A Class III hitch rated to 8,000 lb GTW weight-carrying may be rated to 14,000 lb GTW with a weight-distributing head — but only if the tow vehicle is also rated for that load. Always check both the hitch and the vehicle ratings.
Trailer sway is a side-to-side oscillation that, if uncorrected, can amplify to the point of loss of control. It's caused by aerodynamic forces (crosswind, passing trucks), road imperfections, or a trailer that's too long or too heavy for the tow vehicle. Anti-sway systems reduce the onset and severity of sway — but they don't eliminate the underlying physics. A trailer that exceeds your TV's wheelbase guideline is inherently less stable regardless of what sway control is fitted.
A friction bar connects the trailer's A-frame to the hitch head at an angle. Resistance in the bar dampens lateral movement. Effective at low sway levels; less effective once significant sway begins. Inexpensive and common on older WD setups. Works with a separate WD head.
Built into the WD head itself. The spring bars create tension that resists both weight transfer and lateral movement simultaneously. More effective than separate friction bars and eliminates the separate sway bar. Brands like Equal-i-zer, Andersen, Blue Ox Sway Pro use this approach.
The tow vehicle's stability control system or a dedicated trailer brake controller detects sway and applies the trailer brakes on the swaying side to straighten it. Works at higher sway levels than mechanical systems. Requires electric trailer brakes. Most effective as a last resort — a well-set-up rig with correct tongue weight rarely activates it.
Anti-sway bars and electronic sway control reduce the symptom of a trailer that's too long or too heavy for the tow vehicle. They don't address the underlying physics. If your trailer consistently triggers sway control or requires heavy correction, check that tongue weight is 10–15% of GTW, trailer load is balanced slightly forward of center, and the trailer length is within your TV's wheelbase guideline.
